International Snow Leopard Day 2024 Celebrated to Engage Future Generations in Conservation Efforts

Gilgit, Pakistan – October 23, 2024

International Snow Leopard Day 2024 was celebrated at the Forest Complex by the Forest, Parks, and Wildlife Department of Gilgit, in collaboration with the Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF). This event, designed to raise awareness on the critical role of snow leopards in mountain ecosystems, saw the active participation of key community members, conservationists, and students from six schools.

Main Event at the Forest Complex: The event held at the Forest Complex in Gilgit, led by Mr. Khadim Abass, Conservator Parks and Wildlife Gilgit, featured an awareness walk from the Forest Complex to the Gilgit city entrance gate. Participants carried banners and signs with powerful messages promoting snow leopard conservation. During this event, Mr. Khadim Abass delivered a video message emphasizing the importance of snow leopards for mountain ecology, highlighting how these apex predators help sustain a balanced ecosystem. He provided insights into the origins of International Snow Leopard Day and urged for collective action against threats such as poaching, illegal hunting, and habitat loss.

Mr. Abass praised the efforts made by local communities, whose dedication has contributed to a gradual increase in snow leopard populations in recent years. “International Snow Leopard Day is a reminder of the vital role these animals play and a call for renewed commitment to protect them,” he remarked.

SLF’s Ongoing Efforts and Initiatives: Dr. Hussain Ali, Senior Regional Program Manager at the Snow Leopard Foundation, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to snow leopard conservation. “The snow leopard is an iconic species, and through sustainable conservation practices, we are working to secure its future,” said Dr. Ali. He outlined SLF’s comprehensive efforts, including the establishment of Predator Proof Corrals, Livestock Insurance Schemes, livestock vaccinations, and awareness campaigns. These initiatives, he noted, aim to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts and encourage sustainable livelihoods for communities, promoting a holistic approach to conservation.

Celebrations in Schools with Snow Leopard Club Coordinators: The International Snow Leopard Day activities extended to six schools, where students engaged in a range of planned events organized by Snow Leopard Club Coordinators. These schools included Jamshed Public School (Astak), Diamond Jubilee Middle Schools (Nazbar, Passu, and Ghulkin), Diamond Jubilee High School (Ghulaghmuli), and Shah Wali Model Academy (Gulmit Nagar).

Students enthusiastically participated in the celebrations, reflecting the strong commitment of future generations to preserving wildlife. Activities included educational sessions, creative arts, and interactive discussions, fostering a deep connection to snow leopard conservation among youth. The active involvement of students illustrates the growing awareness and passion for wildlife conservation within local communities and serves as a promising foundation for future conservation efforts.

Looking Ahead: International Snow Leopard Day provides an opportunity to unite communities, organizations, and individuals in their mission to protect this endangered species. The Snow Leopard Foundation and the Forest, Parks, and Wildlife Department of Gilgit will continue to work together to create sustainable solutions, engage local communities, and inspire young minds.
