Successful Celebration of International Snow Leopard Day 2024 in Gilgit Baltistan

October 23, 2024

The Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF) and the Forest, Parks, and Wildlife Department of Gilgit celebrated International Snow Leopard Day 2024 with a series of engaging activities that highlighted the importance of snow leopard conservation. Held at the Forest Complex in Gilgit, the event brought together key stakeholders, local communities, and students to raise awareness about this magnificent species and the critical role it plays in maintaining the ecological balance of mountain ecosystems.

Mr. Khadim Abass, Conservator Parks and Wildlife Gilgit, led the celebrations at the Forest Complex, where participants, including SLF and departmental staff, joined an awareness walk from the complex to the Gilgit city entrance gate. The walk, featuring banners and signs promoting conservation messages, was followed by a video message from Mr. Abass. He spoke on the ecological significance of snow leopards, the history of International Snow Leopard Day, and the ongoing threats posed by poaching, illegal hunting, and habitat loss. He commended local communities for their dedication to protecting snow leopards, which has contributed to a gradual increase in their population in recent years.

Dr. Hussain Ali, Senior Regional Program Manager at SLF, highlighted the foundation’s initiatives to promote sustainable conservation practices. He explained SLF’s comprehensive approach to snow leopard conservation, including the establishment of Predator Proof Corrals, Livestock Insurance Schemes, livestock vaccinations, and awareness campaigns. Each of these efforts addresses key challenges in human-wildlife conflict, helping to create a balanced coexistence between communities and wildlife.

International Snow Leopard Day activities also took place across six schools, where students, guided by SLF’s Snow Leopard Club Coordinators, engaged in educational sessions, arts, and interactive discussions centered around wildlife conservation. Schools involved in the celebration included:

  • Jamshed Public School, Astak
  • Diamond Jubilee Middle Schools (Nazbar, Passu, Ghulkin)
  • Diamond Jubilee High School, Ghulaghmuli
  • Shah Wali Model Academy, Gulmit Nagar

The students’ enthusiasm and active participation underscored the growing awareness and passion for wildlife conservation among the younger generation, demonstrating hope for the future of this endangered species.

The event underscored the commitment of SLF and the Forest, Parks, and Wildlife Department of Gilgit to raising awareness, engaging communities, and promoting sustainable practices for snow leopard conservation. By inspiring communities and educating youth, International Snow Leopard Day 2024 has further solidified the foundation for ongoing conservation efforts.
