Conservation Awareness Signboards Fragile Valleys mark an important step toward protecting snow leopard habitats and promoting responsible tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF) recently organized a targeted awareness and education initiative by Conservation Awareness Signboards Fragile Valleys across ecologically sensitive mountain valleys.
These high-altitude landscapes face growing pressure from road development, rising tourism, and climate change. As a result, clear and accessible conservation messaging has become more important than ever.
Educating Communities and Visitors Through Signage
The newly installed signboards aim to raise awareness about snow leopard conservation, human–wildlife coexistence, and environmental protection. Importantly, the signage is designed for both local communities and travelers passing through key access routes.
Each signboard includes a detailed valley map highlighting trekking routes and camping sites. In addition, it presents key biodiversity features, major tourist attractions, and a visitor code of conduct. This information encourages responsible travel while reducing pressure on fragile ecosystems.
Through this approach, SLF combines conservation education with sustainable tourism awareness.
Strategic Locations in Gojal Valley
In Gojal Valley, visitor information boards were installed at high-visibility locations selected in coordination with partners.
The sites include:

- Misgar, near the Bailey Bridge turn on the Karakoram Highway
- Chipurson Valley, near Sost at the road junction leading to Chipurson
- Karimabad, adjacent to the Rainbow Bridge
These locations experience daily movement of local residents, tourists, and transport traffic. Therefore, they serve as effective platforms for conservation messaging.
Signboards Along the Baltistan Highway

Additional conservation awareness signboards were installed in Astak and Tormik Valleys along the Baltistan Highway. These valleys are environmentally sensitive and increasingly exposed to traffic and infrastructure expansion.
The signboards inform road users about the ecological value of the region. At the same time, they highlight the importance of protecting wildlife habitats in snow leopard landscapes.
Community-Led Awareness in Hanzal Valley
In Hanzal Valley, the installation was carried out in collaboration with the Hanzal Conservation & Development Organization (HC&DO). Community representatives actively participated in selecting the installation site.

This participatory process strengthened local ownership. Moreover, it reinforced the educational purpose of the signboards as shared community assets.
Impact and Long-Term Value
Through this initiative, Conservation Awareness Signboards Fragile Valleys were successfully installed across four key valleys. Educational messages reached communities, commuters, and visitors alike.
For donors and partners, this activity offers strong value. It delivers long-term awareness, supports coexistence, and strengthens conservation visibility along major transit routes.
