The project is being executed by the Parks and Wildlife Department and has the following objectives.
  1. To improve the habitat of all wildlife species in general and game species in particular in Protected Areas including Community Controlled Hunting Areas of Gilgit-Baltistan.
  2. To minimize the competition between wildlife and livestock by improving pasture management in Gilgit-Baltistan.
  3. Strengthen the capabilities of wildlife department field protective staff in wildlife protection habitat management
  4. Persuade the communities about wildlife conservation
Major thematic areas of the project include measures to improve wildlife habitats and wildlife-livestock interaction through the initiation of pilot projects and capacity building of staff by imparting trainings and provision of equipment. Awareness raising in the masses of the importance of wildlife conservation through event celebrations and developing and dissemination resource material constitutes another milestone of the project. At the onset, SLF was assigned implementation of one livestock vaccination campaign, two livestock insurance schemes and two predator proof corrals, respectively. The livestock vaccination campaign was launched in Rakaposhi valley of District Nagar in April 2018 and completed in June 2018. A total of 4,175 livestock including sheep and goats (70%) and cattle (30%) belonging to 438 households were vaccinated. Livestock Insurance Schemes (LISs) were launched in Khyber and Shimshal Valleys of Gojal. These sites were one of the potential sites identified during the District Conservation Committee (DCC), Hunza meeting held in DC office in February 2018. The two sites were also endorsed by the DFO Hunza and Gojal Conservation and Development Association (GCDA) which is the apex body of all valley conservation committees operational in Gojal. Gulkin and Passu were selected for the predator proof corral projects with the consensus of DFO Hunza office and GCDA. The terms and conditions were signed with the respective communities to construct the corrals on cost sharing basis.
