Trail Camera Placement in Karakoram Range Completed

The SLF research team comprising of 7 members has successfully completed the installation of trail cameras in Karakoram range. The study was initiated on request from Communities of Hunza Nagar who wanted to estimate the population of snow leopard in view of increased depredation incidences in the area in recent years. Students from Quaid e Azam University in partnership with GB Wildlife Department and local communities took part in the activity. The team had started in first week of April 2018 tracking and placement of cameras in glaciated habitats of snow leopards and installed 50 cameras in various locations in 20 days. “With this number of cameras, we anticipate to see not only snow leopards but other carnivores as well”, Dr. Muhammad Ali Nawaz Director SLF stated. Cameras shall remain functional for next two months to capture movement of wildlife in the area. This field activity helps us to understand not only about snow leopards and their distribution but also about behavior and useful information of other carnivores. Camera trapping is an increasingly popular, non-invasive and useful tool to study wildlife over large survey areas and for several months at a time. Camera trapping tells if a species (wild animal) is present or absent in the study area, its abundance, species richness and behaviour. Camera trapping is a useful method which helps in population estimation of targeted species through its data analysis. SLF has been conducting this field activity for last 5-6 years. Data and other valuable information collected through this activity has been instrumental in snow leopard conservation efforts by SLF.
